Description

Pete Townshend – Psychoderelict: Music Only – 180 Gram Half-Speed Double Vinyl Record

Psychoderelict is Pete Townshend’s 1993 concept album about Ray High, an aging rock musician caught between creative paralysis, public expectation, and the machinery of the music business. The original release used radio-play dialogue to carry the story, but Townshend also prepared a music-only version. This vinyl edition uses that 15-song configuration, allowing the compositions to stand together without the spoken scenes.

“English Boy” introduces the central character through a broad rock arrangement. The instrumental “Meher Baba M3” connects the project to Townshend’s long-running Lifehouse and spiritual themes. “Let’s Get Pretentious” turns artistic ambition into satire, while “Meher Baba M4 (Signal Box)” creates a harder electronic bridge. “Early Morning Dreams” reveals the longing beneath Ray’s defensive persona.

“I Want That Thing” addresses desire and commercial hunger with a direct rhythmic push. “Outlive the Dinosaur” considers survival in an industry eager to discard older artists. “Now and Then” brings more melodic reflection before “I Am Afraid” states the anxiety plainly. The absence of dialogue changes the pacing: ideas that were once framed as scenes become a sequence of connected songs and instrumental motifs.

“Don’t Try to Make Me Real,” “Predictable,” and “Flame” examine authenticity, repetition, and the creation of a marketable image. “Meher Baba M5 (Vivaldi)” returns to the project’s spiritual and synthesizer language. “Fake It” pushes the conflict between art and performance into the open, and “English Boy (Reprise)” closes by returning to the character’s defining theme.

This black-vinyl edition presents the music-only Psychoderelict for the first time on vinyl. The two 180-gram records were cut at half speed by Miles Showell at Abbey Road Studios. UPC 602455092922 identifies this pressing, whose 15 tracks intentionally exclude all dialogue introductions and narrative interludes found on the original full radio-play version.

Brand new, never played and still sealed in the factory plastic
