James Brown – Say It Live and Loud: Live in Dallas 08.26.68 – Double Vinyl Record

Say It Live and Loud captures James Brown and his orchestra at Dallas Memorial Auditorium on August 26, 1968, only weeks after “Say It Loud – I’m Black and I’m Proud” had been recorded and as the song was reaching the public. The concert documents more than a headline singer. It presents the full Brown stage system: introductions, instrumental features, tightly rehearsed transitions, ballads, funk workouts, and the audience call-and-response that turns the room into part of the arrangement.

The opening sequence moves from the formal show introduction through “If I Ruled the World,” Brown’s thanks, and the introduction to “Say It Loud.” When the song arrives, the crowd answers its refrain with immediate force. “I Guess I’ll Have to Cry, Cry, Cry,” “That’s Life,” and “Kansas City” show how Brown could shift from a new political anthem to standards and emotional soul without breaking the concert’s momentum.

Instrumental pieces including “The Popcorn,” “Soul Pride,” “Tighten Up,” and “Suds” give the band room to display the precision behind the revue. “Introduction to Star Time!” then launches the central run: “Licking Stick,” “Cold Sweat,” and “There Was a Time.” The rhythm section treats short riffs as flexible structures, tightening and releasing pressure through cues that Brown delivers in real time.

A medley of “Try Me,” “Lost Someone,” and “Bewildered” brings the dramatic soul-singer role forward before the band drives through “Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag,” “I Got the Feelin’,” “I Got You,” and “Please, Please, Please.” The expanded finale continues through “I Can’t Stand Myself” and reprises the show’s central themes.

This Republic/UMe expanded edition presents the concert on two vinyl records with approximately 20 minutes not included on the original 1998 CD release. UPC 602567710509 identifies this 2LP configuration. Its 24 indexed selections preserve the full revue structure, including spoken introductions, instrumental features, medleys, and the extended closing sequence.

Brand new, never played and still sealed in the factory plastic
