Mark Knopfler – One Take Radio Sessions – 180 Gram 12-Inch Vinyl EP Record

One Take Radio Sessions captures Mark Knopfler and his band playing live at Shangri-La Studios in Malibu during the campaign for his 2004 album Shangri-La. The recordings were made for radio broadcast with the emphasis on performance rather than elaborate studio construction. Knopfler’s low, conversational singing and immediately recognizable fingerpicked guitar sit at the center of a band sound that is relaxed, precise, and responsive.

“The Trawlerman’s Song” opens with a maritime narrative and understated ensemble support. “Back to Tupelo” turns its attention to Elvis Presley, imagining the unease behind early fame. “Song for Sonny Liston” uses a spare blues frame to portray the boxer as both threatening and trapped. In each song, Knopfler avoids dramatic overstatement; character emerges through details, rhythm, and the spaces around the guitar lines.

“Rüdiger,” originally recorded for Golden Heart, is the set’s one reach beyond Shangri-La material. Its portrait of a quiet autograph seeker gains intimacy in the live studio setting. “Boom, Like That” shifts into a sharper, more satirical mode with its story of Ray Kroc and the expansion of McDonald’s, while the band gives the spoken-sung verses a firm, dry groove.

“Everybody Pays” and “Donegan’s Gone” move between reflective roots music and tribute, the latter acknowledging skiffle pioneer Lonnie Donegan. “Stand Up Guy” closes with a darker character study. The one-take premise is audible not through mistakes but through interaction: tempos breathe, fills answer lyrics, and Knopfler’s solos sound like extensions of the stories rather than overdubbed showcases.

This Mercury Records edition presents all eight performances on a 180-gram 12-inch vinyl EP. UPC 602475352624 identifies this pressing. The release preserves the Shangri-La Studios session as a self-contained program and should not be confused with the full Shangri-La studio album or a conventional concert recording.

Brand new, never played and still sealed in the factory plastic
