Portrait – At One with None – Green Vinyl Record

Swedish heavy-metal band Portrait builds At One with None from twin-guitar drama, occult atmosphere and the sharp melodic instincts of classic 1980s metal. The 2021 album is traditional in vocabulary without sounding like a museum piece, because the band plays with urgency and gives its longer arrangements a strong narrative pull. The Swedish group has spent its career refining this language, and the fifth album shows the benefits of that continuity. Transitions are confident, melodic leads arrive at the right moment, and even the most ornate passages remain connected to a song’s central mood.

The title track opens with an immediate statement of purpose, followed by the ritualistic tension of “Curtains (The Dumb Supper).” “Phantom Fathomer” and “He Who Stands” balance intricate guitar movement with choruses that remain easy to grasp. Per Lengstedt’s high, cutting vocal gives the songs a theatrical center. Christian Lindell and Robin Holmberg build harmony lines that evoke classic metal without relying on a single borrowed gesture. Their guitar work is strongest when melody and menace coexist, giving the choruses lift while preserving the album’s shadowed character.

On the second side, “Ashen” and “A Murder of Crows” deepen the album’s darker mood before “Shadowless” and “The Gallow’s Crossing” bring the sequence to a deliberate close. The production leaves room around the guitars and rhythm section, allowing the harmonies and changes in pace to register clearly. The lyrics and presentation draw on death, ritual and supernatural imagery, but the record’s drama comes from musical control rather than props. Carefully timed pauses and changes in vocal register create suspense before the band returns to a full, driving arrangement.

Portrait draws obvious strength from the lineage of Mercyful Fate and other dramatic European metal, but the album’s appeal is not limited to influence spotting. Its songs are carefully paced, the riffs carry their own identity, and the band understands how to turn atmosphere into momentum rather than decoration. Production by Mersus keeps the record warm and forceful, avoiding both retro murk and modern over-compression. Bass and drums remain present beneath the layered guitars, which helps the longer pieces retain shape as they move through several sections.

This limited Metal Blade Records edition is pressed on green vinyl and housed in a gatefold cover with a printed insert, poster and download card. With only 200 copies reported for this color, it combines a strong full-length album with a notably collectible presentation. The green-vinyl edition was issued in a small run and should not be confused with the black, gold, silver or red-black versions. Matching the color matters for collectors, while the shared gatefold artwork and inserts make every edition visually substantial.
