When Dream and Day Reunite captures a one-night Dream Theater performance built around the band’s 1989 debut. Recorded in Los Angeles in 2004, the concert presents When Dream and Day Unite with the later lineup of James LaBrie, John Petrucci, John Myung, Jordan Rudess and Mike Portnoy. The event is celebratory rather than merely nostalgic, showing how the early compositions changed after fifteen years of technical growth and live experience.
“A Fortune in Lies,” “Status Seeker” and the instrumental “Ytse Jam” retain the debut’s combination of progressive-rock structure and metal weight. LaBrie approaches melodies first recorded by Charlie Dominici with his own phrasing, while Rudess interprets keyboard parts created before he joined the band. The performances respect the original arrangements but carry the heavier sound and greater dynamic control of the 2004 group.
“The Killing Hand” and “Light Fuse and Get Away” fill the second side with long-form writing that already contained the band’s essential interests: recurring themes, rapid changes in meter and dramatic contrast between intricate sections and melodic release. Petrucci and Myung make the demanding passages sound precise without losing momentum, and Portnoy’s drumming connects the concert directly to the debut’s original rhythmic architecture.
The second record completes the album with “Afterlife,” “The Ones Who Help to Set the Sun” and “Only a Matter of Time,” then adds “To Live Forever” and “Metropolis.” Former members Charlie Dominici and Derek Sherinian join the encore, giving the reunion a genuine connection to multiple stages of Dream Theater history. Those additions turn the set from a straight album performance into a broader celebration of the band’s beginnings.
This Lost Not Forgotten Archives edition includes the concert on two 180 gram vinyl records plus a CD containing the same ten-song program. Issued by Inside Out Music and Sony under catalog numbers IOMLP 605 and 19439926241, it is a reissued and remastered presentation in a gatefold package. The included CD provides a convenient complete-play option while the vinyl preserves the four-side concert sequence.
