Sonic Youth – In/Out/In – Vinyl Record
In/Out/In opens a door onto the exploratory side of Sonic Youth’s final decade. Released by Three Lobed Recordings in 2022, it gathers five pieces recorded between 2000 and 2010, concentrating on material that developed outside the usual shape of the band’s song-based albums. Most of the music is instrumental, and the emphasis falls on the ways guitars, bass, drums, and occasional voice can suggest a direction without following a conventional verse and chorus. The recordings offer a close view of a group whose experiments continued alongside its more widely circulated studio releases.
“Basement Contender” begins the album with material recorded in 2008 at Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore’s Northampton home. Its unhurried guitar interplay gives the collection a welcoming point of entry, letting small changes in the instruments become the focus. “In & Out,” drawn from 2010 recordings in Pomona and Hoboken, introduces Gordon’s wordless voice into a similarly open setting. These performances show how the band could sustain interest through shared attention to sound, allowing repetition to become a framework for gradual movement rather than simply a device for holding a song together.
“Machine” provides a more concise interruption. Recorded during the sessions for The Eternal, it compresses the group’s instrumental vocabulary into a shorter form, putting rhythmic changes and chiming guitar into close proximity. Its presence helps the collection cover several working methods rather than presenting one uninterrupted jam. By moving between a brief studio piece and longer explorations, In/Out/In makes the relationship between composition and improvisation easier to hear. A texture that might become a passing detail on a conventional album can be treated here as an idea worth following in its own right.
“Social Static” takes the record into its most abrasive territory. Created for the film of the same name by Chris Habib and Spencer Tunick, it uses noise and unstable guitar sound on a scale that differs sharply from the preceding track. The closing “Out & In” reaches back to 2000 and includes Jim O’Rourke, connecting this later archive to an earlier configuration of the band. Its extended duration provides another view of how Sonic Youth could let a piece grow through shifts in density, attack, and harmonic tension.
The complete five-track vinyl program places these recordings beside one another as a coherent look at the band’s working life. Some material had appeared in Three Lobed’s earlier multi-artist box set, while the collection brings the pieces together under Sonic Youth’s own name. For listeners drawn to the SYR releases, long instrumental passages, and the less predictable edges of their albums, In/Out/In offers substantial music from that same field of activity. It preserves the curiosity of the group’s later years, with the players continuing to find possibilities in the interaction of familiar instruments.
