Keb’ Mo’ – Good to Be… – Indie Exclusive Red Double Vinyl Record
Good to Be… is an album about belonging that draws its musical character from more than one home. Keb’ Mo’ wrote material in Nashville and in the Compton house where he grew up, bringing his present life into conversation with the place that first shaped him. Released in 2022, the record makes that connection through blues, soul, country, and relaxed pop songwriting. The mood is often warm, but the warmth comes from attention to people and everyday experience rather than a refusal to acknowledge difficulty.
The opening “Good to Be (Home Again)” establishes the album’s welcoming tone. Mo’s voice has an easy conversational quality, and his guitar playing tends to support the song rather than demand attention for its own sake. That approach gives the arrangements room to breathe. “So Easy” and “Sunny and Warm” continue the sense of openness, with melodies that sound unforced even when the production brings several elements together. The blues foundation remains audible without requiring every track to follow a strict traditional form.
The collaborators reflect the range of that approach. Vince Gill and producer Tom Hambridge help connect the project to country and blues traditions, while guests including Darius Rucker, Kristin Chenoweth, and Old Crow Medicine Show add distinct personalities. “Good Strong Woman” pairs Mo with Rucker, and “The Medicine Man” brings the string-band presence of Old Crow Medicine Show into the record. These meetings work within an established musical world; the guests widen the conversation without making the album feel like a collection of unrelated appearances.
Bill Withers’s “Lean on Me” is a natural fit for the record’s emphasis on mutual support. Placed among Mo’s own songs, it makes the connection between familiar soul writing and his contemporary approach especially clear. “’62 Chevy” brings a different kind of memory into the program, while “All Dressed Up” and “Like Love” keep the writing grounded in recognizable situations. The album’s title leaves its thought unfinished, and the songs offer different ways of completing it through home, companionship, movement, and gratitude.
“Louder,” “So Good to Me,” and “Quiet Moments” carry the later stretch toward a calm close. The thirteen-song program is broad enough to show several sides of Keb’ Mo’s music while retaining the intimacy of his singing and guitar. This indie exclusive red double vinyl edition presents the complete album. Good to Be… is particularly appealing for the way it places Compton and Nashville in the same musical picture, treating roots as something that can grow and connect rather than something that has to stay fixed.
