Tony Williams – Foreign Intrigue – 180 Gram Vinyl Record

Foreign Intrigue marked Tony Williams’s return to Blue Note as a leader in 1985, with seven original compositions and a group assembled around his developing late-career writing. Wallace Roney plays trumpet, Donald Harrison plays alto saxophone, Bobby Hutcherson plays vibraphone, Mulgrew Miller plays piano and Ron Carter plays bass. Williams leads from the drums, with electronic drums and drum machine also among his credited instruments. The album connects his long history with the label to a new period in which his compositions became a central focus. This Blue Note 80 edition presents the complete original program on a single 180 gram vinyl LP.

Williams’s Blue Note history extended back to his early leader albums Life Time and Spring, as well as appearances on recordings such as Herbie Hancock’s Maiden Voyage, Eric Dolphy’s Out to Lunch! and Andrew Hill’s Point of Departure. Foreign Intrigue therefore represents a return within a continuing artistic relationship. The group on this album gives his writing a different set of resources, particularly through the combination of trumpet, alto saxophone, piano and vibraphone. Roney and Harrison provide contrasting horn voices, while Hutcherson adds an instrumental color that can work alongside Miller’s piano without duplicating it. Carter’s bass gives the ensemble another connection to Williams’s earlier musical world while helping support this new body of compositions.

The title track opens the first side, followed by My Michele and Life of the Party. Those three pieces introduce the program as a set of Williams originals rather than a drummer-led collection of standards. The distinction matters because the leader’s influence is present in the material as well as in the rhythmic execution. A composition can establish the relationship between horns and rhythm section, determine how the vibraphone enters the ensemble and shape the setting for an individual solo. Williams’s drumming remains a major attraction, but the album also asks the listener to follow the ideas he gives the whole band to develop. The first side establishes that broader role clearly.

Takin’ My Time begins the second side before Clearways, Sister Cheryl and Arboretum complete the album. Sister Cheryl became a recognizable part of Williams’s later repertoire and is an important point of connection for listeners exploring this period of his work. The seven-piece program keeps the emphasis on the same group of musicians, letting the contrasts emerge through the compositions and their instrumental relationships. Hutcherson’s vibraphone is a particularly useful part of the album’s identity, adding another melodic voice around the piano and horns. The combination gives the session a fuller range of colors than a conventional trumpet-and-saxophone quintet while keeping the ensemble small enough for individual contributions to remain clear.

Foreign Intrigue began a substantial run of Williams leader recordings after Blue Note’s 1980s relaunch. It is relevant to collectors following his development beyond the 1960s, especially those interested in how his work as a composer expanded alongside his reputation as a drummer. The presence of Roney, Harrison and Miller connects the session with a younger generation, while Hutcherson and Carter bring their own extensive histories to the music. This Blue Note 80 reissue was mastered by Kevin Gray and pressed on 180 gram vinyl at Optimal. It retains the original three selections on the first side and four on the second, ending with Arboretum and presenting all seven Williams compositions as one complete album.
