Ed Sheeran – Autumn Variations – White Vinyl Record
Ed Sheeran built Autumn Variations around people close to him. The fourteen songs follow different lives through a period of change, moving between new relationships, private worries, nights out, and the difficulty of getting through an ordinary day when everything feels unsettled. Released in 2023 through his own Gingerbread Man Records, it arrived only months after Subtract. Both albums were made with Aaron Dessner, but Autumn Variations broadens the perspective beyond Sheeran's own experiences. Friends become the starting point for songs that still sound unmistakably like the man telling them.
The idea came partly from Edward Elgar's Enigma Variations, whose musical portraits represented people in the composer's circle. Sheeran applies that idea to a collection of pop songs, giving each subject room to have a different mood. Romance belongs here, but so do uncertainty and disconnection. That makes the contrast between the hopeful American Town and the troubled Plastic Bag more than a change of pace: these are different people finding themselves in very different places. The autumn setting gives the record a shared atmosphere without requiring every song to arrive at the same conclusion.
Dessner's production suits the quieter side of Sheeran's songwriting. Acoustic textures, restrained rhythms, and layered accompaniment leave plenty of space around the vocal. The melodies are easy to follow, while the arrangements give the songs detail without constantly reaching for the biggest possible chorus. Magical and Amazing draw on Sheeran's gift for direct, tuneful writing; Blue and Page make room for a more inward mood. He has always been able to work with a small musical frame, and the Dessner partnership brings that ability back into focus across a full album.
The title also leaves room for the less picturesque side of a changing season. When Will I Be Alright and That's On Me carry doubt into a record that elsewhere finds comfort in companionship. The Day I Was Born approaches its subject from another angle again, allowing the feeling of being alone to interrupt an occasion usually associated with celebration. Sheeran keeps these situations close to everyday experience. Rather than building every song around a grand event, he often starts with the thoughts someone might admit to a friend once the conversation has gone beyond the usual small talk.
Autumn Variations offers a useful companion to Subtract because it shows what else the Sheeran and Dessner collaboration could do during that same productive period. The subject matter moves between several lives, yet Sheeran's voice and melodic instincts hold the fourteen songs together. England, Spring, and Midnight help establish the album's sense of place and passing time, while the relationships remain its real center. For listeners who gravitate toward Sheeran's acoustic writing and his more personal material, this is a full album devoted to that side of his music, with room for both affection and the messier feelings that accompany it.
Brand new, never played and still sealed in the factory plastic
