Description
Sabrina Carpenter – Singular: Act II – Vinyl Record
Singular: Act II completes Sabrina Carpenter's two-part project by letting a more vulnerable perspective into the room. The nine-song album appeared in July 2019, following the bright assurance of Act I with writing that makes space for anxiety, independence, attraction, and second thoughts. Carpenter described the division between the two acts as different expressions of confidence. Here, confidence can mean admitting uncertainty as well as answering someone firmly. The pop and R&B arrangements remain accessible, but the songs give her more than one way to present herself inside them.
In My Bed opens with a subject Carpenter connected to overwhelming thoughts and anxiety. It establishes a more complicated inner life than the album's polished surface might initially suggest. Pushing 20 follows with a different posture, drawing on R&B production from Warren “Oak” Felder and marking her approach to a new decade of adulthood. Those two songs make a useful pair at the beginning: one turns inward, while the other asks for enough independence to decide where she is going. Her vocal can accommodate both without losing the lightness and rhythmic precision that make the melodies approachable.
Saweetie joins I Can't Stop Me, adding a rap voice and a different personality to the first side. I'm Fakin and Take Off All Your Cool continue the album's interest in how attraction and self-presentation complicate a conversation. Carpenter worked with collaborators including Oak Felder, Paul Phamous, Johan Carlsson, and Ross Golan across the project. The songs benefit from that range of writing and production relationships, with the settings changing enough for a guest appearance or a more exposed vocal to feel purposeful. The album's continuity comes from Carpenter's perspective rather than from making every track use the same arrangement.
Exhale is the clearest example of the record's willingness to step away from a more assertive pop pose. Co-written with Carlsson and Golan and produced by Carlsson, it places the vocal against a restrained setting that includes clean guitar and strings. Carpenter had introduced the song to fans on tour before the album's release, and its quieter delivery gives the writing space to register. Positioned on the second side after Tell Em, it offers a distinct change in emotional emphasis. The song asks for a moment of relief, making that request an important part of the album's idea of self-confidence.
Take You Back and Looking at Me complete the standard nine-track program, with the closing song returning to a more outward-facing pop performance. Singular: Act II belongs to the same creative period as Act I, yet In My Bed and Exhale give it a separate identity worth hearing on its own. Pushing 20 and the Saweetie collaboration preserve the rhythmic energy, while the quieter material makes the singer's interior life more visible. The vinyl edition keeps those changes together across two sides, presenting the second act as a complete album with its own balance of attitude and candor.
