Description
De La Soul – Cabin in the Sky – Double Sky Blue Vinyl Records
De La Soul have always made room for complicated feelings inside a welcoming record. Cabin in the Sky, released in 2025 through Mass Appeal, carries that instinct into their first studio album in nine years. It arrives after the death of Dave Jolicoeur, better known as Trugoy the Dove, and the loss gives its conversations about friendship, family and endurance a particular weight. Posdnuos and Maseo honor their partner while letting humor, affection and everyday life share the same space as mourning. The album’s twenty tracks make that mixture feel personal rather than ceremonial.
The opening ‘Cabin Talk’ brings Giancarlo Esposito into the frame before ‘YUHDONTSTOP,’ ‘Sunny Storms’ and ‘Good Health’ establish the record’s forward motion. Those titles suggest the range of its concerns: carrying on, living with change and taking care of yourself and the people around you. De La’s conversational approach leaves room for vulnerability without abandoning the pleasure of a well-delivered verse. The quieter implications of the album sit alongside the familiar energy of voices finding their place inside a beat.
Pete Rock, DJ Premier and Supa Dave West are among the producers involved, connecting the record to musicians who understand De La’s relationship with soul, rhythm and the spaces between phrases. Pete Rock’s work on ‘The Package’ is one of those connections. Across the album, the production supports an unusually varied guest list without making every appearance feel like a separate event. The group’s own perspective remains the organizing force, so the music can move between reflection and a more outward-looking mood without losing its center.
There is plenty of personality in the company they keep. Killer Mike joins ‘A Quick 16 for Mama,’ Nas appears on ‘Run It Back!!,’ and Black Thought contributes to ‘EN EFF.’ ‘Yours’ brings Common and Slick Rick together, while Q-Tip and Yummy Bingham share ‘Day in the Sun (Gettin’ wit U).’ Yukimi of Little Dragon, Bilal and Gina Loring broaden the vocal palette further. These pairings connect different generations and approaches to hip-hop, giving the songs distinct voices while keeping the larger conversation about community audible.
Cabin in the Sky also belongs to Mass Appeal’s Legend Has It series, placing De La’s return alongside new projects from other foundational hip-hop artists. The album closes with its title track and ‘Don’t Push Me,’ after a program that makes room for both celebrated collaborators and intimate subjects. This edition presents the complete twenty-track album on two sky-blue records, with alternate artwork, a gatefold jacket and printed inner sleeves. It is a substantial return from a group whose imagination has long depended on how much real life they can bring into a song.
Brand new, never played and still sealed in the factory plastic
