Indigo Girls – Rites Of Passage – Cassette
Rites of Passage is the fourth studio album by the American folk rock duo Indigo Girls, released on May 12, 1992, by Epic Records.
The album was recorded over four months at Bearsville Studios in Woodstock, New York, marking a longer production period compared to their previous records. The duo collaborated with notable musicians, including members of Siouxsie and the Banshees—drummer Budgie, cellist Martin McCarrick, and percussionist Talvin Singh—as well as Gang of Four bassist Sara Lee. Amy Ray expressed enthusiasm about working with Budgie, citing him as one of her favorite drummers. Emily Saliers noted that Ray aimed to incorporate a Celtic feel into certain tracks, which was achieved through the inclusion of instruments like the uilleann pipes and bouzouki.
Rites of Passage showcases a more colorful and punchy sound compared to the duo’s earlier work, blending acoustic guitars, mandolin, and world-folk elements. The album delves into themes of pain, suffering, fear, loathing, angst, anger, desire, and dread, with lyrics that are highly personal and possess a strong literary bent.
The lead single, ‘Galileo,’ received significant airplay on radio and MTV in the U.S., contributing to the album’s commercial success. ‘Rites of Passage’ peaked at number 21 on the Billboard 200 and was later certified Platinum by the RIAA. Critics noted the album’s more colorful and punchy arrangements, with The Washington Post highlighting the duo’s ability to inject humor into their otherwise introspective musings. Trouser Press remarked that producer Peter Collins revealed a crystalline mainstream pop center in the duo’s music.
