The Hardship Post – Somebody Spoke – Cassette

Somebody Spoke is the sole full-length album by the Canadian alternative rock band The Hardship Post, released on May 23, 1995, through Sub Pop Records.

Formed in St. John’s, Newfoundland, in 1992, The Hardship Post relocated to Halifax, Nova Scotia, during the early 1990s, becoming part of the vibrant Halifax Pop Explosion scene. The band originally comprised vocalist and guitarist Sebastian Lippa, bassist Mike Kean, and drummer Matt Clarke. After releasing two EPs, Mood Ring and Hack, in 1993 under Murderecords, Mike Pick replaced Kean on bass in mid-1993. In late 1994, they signed with Sub Pop, leading to the production of Somebody Spoke. The album was recorded at White Room Studios in Detroit, Michigan, with Al Sutton as the recording engineer.

The album showcases the band’s indie rock and grunge influences, characterized by melodic hooks, distorted guitars, and introspective lyrics. Tracks like ‘New Wave’ and ‘GarbageTruck’ exemplify their energetic sound, while songs such as ‘Your Sunshine’ reveal a more melodic and contemplative side.

Somebody Spoke was well-received in the Canadian alternative music scene, earning a nomination for Best Alternative Album at the Juno Awards of 1996.

The album’s release coincided with lineup changes, including the departure of drummer Matt Clarke, who was replaced by Alyson MacLeod of Jale. This lineup, sometimes referred to as ‘The New Hardship Post,’ released a single in 1996 before the band’s dissolution in 1997.

The Hardship Post was a notable part of the Canadian indie rock scene in the 1990s, contributing to the Halifax Pop Explosion alongside bands like Sloan and Thrush Hermit. Their music reflects the grunge and alternative rock influences of the era, characterized by a blend of melodic sensibilities and raw guitar-driven sound.
