Nine is Blink-182 trying to modernize without completely losing their identity—and it lands somewhere right in the middle of that tension. It’s darker, more produced, and more influenced by contemporary pop and electronic elements than their earlier work, but you can still hear the DNA of the band underneath it.
The production is the biggest shift. This is a heavily layered, polished album—synths, programmed drums, vocal effects—all sitting alongside the traditional guitars. It’s a far cry from the raw pop-punk energy of their early records. Instead of fast, punchy tracks, a lot of the songs here are mid-tempo, mood-driven, and built around atmosphere as much as hooks. It gives the album a cohesive, modern sound, but also distances it from that classic Blink looseness.
The dynamic between Mark Hoppus and Matt Skiba defines the record. Skiba brings a darker tone and slightly more edge, while Hoppus anchors things with a familiar melodic style. The contrast works, but it’s different—this isn’t the same interplay fans associate with the band’s earlier lineup, and that shift changes the emotional feel of the songs.
Nine leans into heavier themes than you might expect—anxiety, isolation, self-doubt—wrapped in a more polished, pop-forward structure. There’s less of the humor and irreverence that defined classic Blink, and more introspection. That gives the album weight, but also changes its personality.
What stands out is how calculated the album feels. It’s clearly trying to fit into a modern alt-pop/rock space, and it does that effectively in terms of sound. But that same precision can make it feel less spontaneous. The rough edges that once defined Blink-182 are smoothed out here, replaced by a more controlled, studio-driven approach.
Polished, darker, and more modern—but less raw. Nine shows Blink-182 adapting to a new era, even if it means sacrificing some of the chaos that made them stand out in the first place.
