Bob Marley & The Wailers – Catch a Fire 50th Anniversary Edition – 3 Compact Disc Set
Catch a Fire was the album that introduced Bob Marley and the Wailers to a broad international rock audience without severing the music from its Jamaican foundation. Released by Island in 1973, it paired the core Wailers performances with overdubs and sequencing designed for listeners encountering reggae as an album form. “Concrete Jungle,” “Slave Driver,” “Stir It Up,” and “No More Trouble” established a sound that was politically alert, rhythmically deep, and immediately distinctive.
The first disc presents the original nine-track studio album. Peter Tosh’s “400 Years” and “Stop That Train” sit beside Marley’s writing, preserving the group identity that existed before the later Bob Marley and the Wailers lineup. The rhythm section leaves deliberate space around guitar, organ, and voice, while the Island production adds texture without hiding the bass-and-drum foundation.
Disc two contains the Wailers’ complete May 24, 1973 performance at the Paris Theatre in London. The concert moves from “Rastaman Chant” through much of Catch a Fire and closes with “Kinky Reggae.” “Get Up, Stand Up,” not included on the studio album, points toward Burnin’. The live setting removes some studio layering and makes the interplay among Marley, Tosh, Bunny Wailer, and the band especially clear.
The third disc returns to the sessions through Jamaican extended, alternate, instrumental, and working versions. Multiple approaches to “Slave Driver,” “400 Years,” “Stir It Up,” “No More Trouble,” and “Stop That Train” show how arrangements evolved. Three tracks from the Sundown Theatre in Edmonton add another 1973 live setting, including “Get Up, Stand Up.”
This Island Records 50th Anniversary Edition is a three-CD set identified by UPC 602455659835. It contains the nine-track studio album, ten-track Paris Theatre concert, and 12-track sessions-and-Edmonton disc. The expanded package is materially different from the standard single CD and from the vinyl anniversary configurations.
Brand new, never played and still sealed in the factory plastic
