Wuthering Heights is Charli xcx’s twelve-song companion album for Emerald Fennell’s film adaptation of Emily Brontë’s novel. Rather than approaching the project as a conventional period soundtrack, Charli builds a modern interior world for obsession, confinement, desire, cruelty, and memory. Electronic pressure, distorted voices, strings, choral scale, and moments of exposed melody make the record feel connected to the story’s gothic intensity without requiring nineteenth-century musical language.
“House,” featuring John Cale, opens the album with spoken-word gravity and a sense of architecture becoming psychological space. The song treats a building as witness, prison, inheritance, and body, establishing the album’s interest in places that absorb human conflict. “Wall of Sound” and “Dying for You” intensify that atmosphere through density and repetition, while Charli’s vocal choices move between direct pop clarity and processing that makes the voice sound distant, doubled, or trapped inside the arrangement.
The middle sequence turns romantic fixation into something unstable. “Always Everywhere,” “Chains of Love,” and “Out of Myself” use titles that could promise devotion, yet the music keeps revealing compulsion, imbalance, and self-erasure beneath the surface. Much of the project was created with Finn Keane, whose production partnership with Charli supports abrupt contrasts between electronic abrasion and graceful orchestral color. “Open up,” “Seeing Things,” and “Altars” widen the record’s emotional and ritual vocabulary. Love appears as demand, haunting, sacrifice, and transformation, while recurring textures make separate songs feel like rooms inside the same structure. The sequencing is compact—approximately thirty-four minutes—but it favors immersion over narrative explanation. Listeners familiar with the novel or film can attach the music to character and image, while others can experience it as an independent dark-pop cycle.
“Eyes of the World,” featuring Sky Ferreira, brings two distinctive voices into a song about exposure and judgment before “My Reminder” and “Funny Mouth” close the program. The final tracks resist a neat emotional resolution, which suits a story defined by attachments that outlast reason and even death. Charli’s strength here is not only stylistic experimentation; it is her willingness to make desire sound uncomfortable, grand, embarrassing, beautiful, and destructive within the same short album.
This compact-disc edition is packaged in a four-panel digipak with a clear tray and sixteen-page booklet. The physical format preserves the album’s visual identity alongside the complete twelve-track sequence and gives the concise project a deliberately designed object rather than a generic jewel case.
