Eric Church’s Carolina is his second studio album, released on March 24, 2009 via Capitol Nashville. It followed his 2006 debut Sinners Like Me and marked a major turning point in his career, both commercially and artistically. Produced by Jay Joyce, who would become Church’s long-term creative partner, the album carries a darker, more textured sound than much of contemporary country radio at the time. Joyce’s production emphasizes moody guitar tones, layered instrumentation, and a sense of atmosphere rather than straightforward radio gloss. The result is a record that blends Southern rock grit with introspective country songwriting.
The breakout single “Love Your Love the Most” became Church’s first Top 10 hit on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, helping establish him as a rising force in Nashville. It was followed by “Hell on the Heart,” which also reached the Top 10 and became one of his early signature songs. Another standout, “Smoke a Little Smoke,” further cemented his outlaw-leaning persona and became a fan favorite.
Carolina balances swagger with vulnerability. Tracks like “Those I’ve Loved” explore personal relationships with emotional weight, while songs such as “Pledge Allegiance to the Hag” reflect his reverence for traditional country influences. The title track, “Carolina,” serves as a tribute to his home state and underscores the personal grounding that runs through the album.
The album reached the Top 20 on the Billboard 200 and the Top 5 on the Top Country Albums chart, eventually earning Platinum certification.
