Flamin’ Groovies – Supersnazz, released in 1969, is the debut studio album from the San Francisco-based Flamin’ Groovies, and it remains a vibrant, offbeat gem in the evolution of American rock ‘n’ roll. Coming at a time when psychedelic rock was dominating the West Coast scene, Supersnazz stood out by looking backward rather than forward—channeling the raw energy of 1950s rock ‘n’ roll, rockabilly, R&B, and garage rock, with a twist of satirical wit and rebellious spirit.
Right from the start, the Groovies had a reputation for being out of step with their era—and proudly so. Led by Cyril Jordan and frontman Roy Loney, the band brought a wild mix of Little Richard-style piano pounding, Chuck Berry guitar licks, and Stonesy swagger, filtered through a lo-fi, almost cartoonish garage aesthetic. Supersnazz plays like a retro rock party that doesn’t take itself too seriously, but still kicks with serious attitude and musicianship.
What sets Supersnazz apart is its playful irreverence. The Flamin’ Groovies would later shift toward a more British Invasion/power pop sound in the 1970s, especially with the classic Shake Some Action, but Supersnazz captures them at their wildest and most chaotic, reveling in the primal joys of early rock.
Supersnazz is a fun, frantic, and fiercely unhip debut that wore its love of 1950s rock proudly in the middle of the psychedelic revolution. It’s essential listening for fans of proto-punk, garage rock, and the lineage of bands who kept rock ‘n’ roll loud, fast, and a little unhinged.
