Grey Daze’s The Phoenix is a 2022 studio album built around newly reworked recordings featuring the late Chester Bennington, issued through Loma Vista Recordings. It follows 2020’s Amends and continues the project of revisiting and rebuilding material originally recorded by Grey Daze in the 1990s, before Bennington rose to global prominence with Linkin Park.
The band—originally formed in Phoenix, Arizona—returned to their early catalog and reconstructed songs using Bennington’s archived vocal takes. Rather than releasing raw demos, the surviving members rebuilt the instrumentals from the ground up, aiming for a modern production approach while keeping the emotional core of the original performances intact. The result blends 1990s alternative rock roots with contemporary post-grunge polish.
The Phoenix leans into heavy guitars, layered atmospherics, and dramatic dynamic shifts. Tracks such as “Saturation (Strange Love)” and “Starting to Fly” highlight Bennington’s early vocal intensity—already showing the emotional power and range that would later define his mainstream success. The production is fuller and more cinematic than the band’s original independent recordings, with thicker low end and expanded arrangements.
The album centers on themes that were already present in Bennington’s teenage writing: isolation, frustration, longing, and self-examination.
