Hot Animal Machine is the debut solo album by American musician and spoken word artist Henry Rollins. The album was released in 1987, shortly after Rollins left the punk rock band Black Flag.
Hot Animal Machine showcases a departure from Rollins’ previous punk rock work and delves into a more experimental and avant-garde sound. The album features a mix of spoken word pieces, spoken word with musical accompaniment, and a few traditional songs. Rollins’ distinctive vocal delivery and thought-provoking lyrics are central to the album’s impact.
Hank roared out of the box with this, his first solo release after the demise of Black Flag. Recorded in England with friend and guitarist Chris Haskett. This is a less groove-oriented album than subsequent Rollins Band releases, but it is still one hell of a rock & roll record. The punishing opener ‘Black and White’ and the cover of Suicide’s ‘Ghost Rider’ make this disc indispensable to the Rollins fan, while the whole of the album will quench the thirst of any rock junkie.
The album’s unconventional and challenging nature reflects Rollins’ exploration of personal themes, society, and introspection. ‘Hot Animal Machine’ captures a raw and intense energy, showcasing Rollins’ transition into a solo artist with his own unique artistic vision.
