Smegma Plays Merzbow is a collaborative project between the American experimental noise group Smegma and the Japanese noise artist Merzbow. Originally released in 1996, the album showcases a unique exchange of sonic material, with each artist reinterpreting the other’s work to create a fusion of avant-garde soundscapes.
The album is divided into two main sections:
Electro Smegmacoustic Music: In this segment, Merzbow utilizes tapes provided by Smegma, incorporating them into his compositions. The tracks are characterized by Merzbow’s signature noise techniques, blending Smegma’s source material with his own electronic manipulations.
Smegma Plays Merzbow: Conversely, Smegma takes tapes from Merzbow and integrates them into their experimental framework. This section features a mix of tape loops, record players, wood flute, vocals, optigan, musette, and frequency analyzers, resulting in a distinctive collage of sounds.
Recorded and mixed at ZSF Produkt Studio on January 8, 1996, Merzbow’s tracks employ MA-tape, audio generators, teleband transceivers, and mixers to craft his interpretations. Composed in 1996 at Smegma Studios, their tracks utilize Merzbow’s tapes alongside various instruments and devices to create their unique soundscapes. The album was remastered and designed by John Wiese, who also recommended using shuffle play for unique compositions with each listen, highlighting the album’s experimental nature.
