So Close to What??? is the expanded physical edition of Tate McRae's third studio album, adding five songs to the original program and bringing the compact disc to twenty-one tracks. The album studies desire, confidence, jealousy, memory, and the unstable moment when knowing what one wants does not make the next decision obvious. McRae's background as a dancer shapes the rhythmic precision, but the writing repeatedly exposes feelings that a controlled performance cannot remove. The deluxe sequence makes those contradictions more visible.
Five new recordings lead this edition. “Trying on Shoes” uses an ordinary act as a frame for experimenting with identity and possibility. “Anything But Love” defines the boundary a relationship keeps approaching, while “Nobody's Girl” reclaims self-definition outside possession. “Horseshoe” turns luck and repetition into its own image, and “Tit for Tat” answers public and private provocation with directness. Placing the new material first makes the deluxe CD a newly ordered program rather than the original album followed by a detached appendix.
“Miss Possessive” then begins the sequence familiar from the original release with a warning delivered through theatrical control. “Revolving Door” describes return as a cycle the narrator recognizes but has not escaped. On “bloodonmyhands,” Flo Milli adds a contrasting rap presence to a track about blame and consequence. “Dear God,” “Purple Lace Bra,” and “Sports Car” move between confession, scrutiny, and immediate attraction. McRae's vocal delivery often keeps one phrase conversational while the beat pushes toward a larger chorus.
The middle of the album includes “Signs,” “I Know Love” with The Kid LAROI, and “Like I Do.” The collaboration introduces another voice into an album otherwise defined by close first-person perspective. “It's ok I'm ok” uses apparent reassurance as a dismissal, and “No I'm Not in Love” turns denial into a hook whose repetition raises its own doubts. “Means I Care” and “Greenlight” continue the tension between guarded language and physical momentum, allowing the production to move even when the narrator remains undecided.
“2 Hands” reduces desire to a clear request, while “Siren Sounds” appears here as a bonus track before “Nostalgia” closes the record. The final song looks backward after an album built around present intensity, giving the sequence an emotional distance it did not have at the start. Across the twenty-one tracks, McRae combines dance-pop, contemporary R&B, and direct diary-like writing. The expansion does not solve every relationship described; it provides more angles on the same cycle of attraction, control, and reconsideration.
