WASP – Reidolized (The Soundtrack To The Crimson Idol) – Double Compact Discs and DVD
ReIdolized (The Soundtrack to the Crimson Idol) is a 2018 album by W.A.S.P., revisiting one of the band’s most ambitious works. The project is closely connected to The Crimson Idol, the band’s 1992 concept album that told the dark, tragic story of a young rock star named Jonathan who achieves fame but ultimately finds it hollow and destructive. ReIdolized presents a newly recorded and reimagined version of that narrative, expanding the original story and bringing the music closer to how band leader Blackie Lawless had originally envisioned it.
The original Crimson Idol was already considered one of the most theatrical and story-driven albums in heavy metal, blending dramatic songwriting with a detailed narrative structure. It followed Jonathan’s journey from a troubled childhood through his rise to stardom, exploring themes of loneliness, ambition, identity, and the emotional cost of fame. While the 1992 album established the foundation of that story, ReIdolized adds additional music and narrative elements that help clarify and complete the concept.
Musically, the album maintains the melodic heavy metal style that defined W.A.S.P. during the early 1990s, combining powerful guitar riffs with dramatic arrangements and emotional vocal performances. The songs often shift between quieter, reflective passages and heavier, guitar-driven sections, reinforcing the theatrical atmosphere of the story. Blackie Lawless’s distinctive voice remains central to the album, delivering the narrative with a mixture of grit, intensity, and vulnerability.
One of the key differences between ReIdolized and the original album is its expanded structure. Additional tracks and rearranged sequences help flesh out the storyline, providing more context for Jonathan’s rise and fall. The project was also released alongside a film version of the story, allowing the narrative to unfold visually as well as musically.
ReIdolized stands as both a tribute to and a reinterpretation of one of their most respected albums. It reflects Blackie Lawless’s long-standing desire to fully realize the concept behind The Crimson Idol, presenting the story with updated recordings and a more complete narrative framework. For fans of the band, the album offers a deeper look into one of heavy metal’s most dramatic and emotionally driven concept stories.
