Bon Iver – 22, A Million – Vinyl Record
22, A Million is the third studio album by American indie folk band Bon Iver, released in 2016. It marks a significant departure from the band’s previous sound, incorporating elements of electronic music, glitchy effects, and experimental production techniques while still retaining Bon Iver’s signature introspective songwriting.
The album is characterized by its unique song titles, unconventional song structures, and cryptic lyrical content, which often explore themes of identity, spirituality, and self-discovery. It opens with the atmospheric track ’22 (OVER S∞∞N),’ where Justin Vernon’s haunting vocals are layered over a backdrop of glitchy beats, distorted samples, and ethereal harmonies.
Throughout the album, Bon Iver combines organic instrumentation with electronic elements, creating a rich and textured sonic landscape. Tracks like ’10 d E A T h b R E a s T ⚄ ⚄’ and ’33 ‘GOD” showcase this fusion, with the band’s acoustic guitars and Vernon’s distinct falsetto blending seamlessly with glitchy effects and manipulated vocal samples.
22, A Million also features moments of raw vulnerability, as heard in tracks like ‘715 – CR∑∑KS’ where Vernon’s heavily autotuned vocals take center stage, conveying a sense of emotional longing and introspection.
The album’s production is intricate and meticulous, with layers of sounds and textures carefully crafted to create a sense of sonic exploration. It experiments with unconventional song structures, fragmented lyrics, and abstract musical motifs, creating an album that demands active engagement from the listener.
22, A Million represents Bon Iver’s evolution as a band, showcasing their willingness to push boundaries and explore new sonic territories. It is a bold and ambitious album that invites listeners into a complex and introspective world, where vulnerability and experimentation coexist in harmony.
