Boris – Heavy Rocks (2022) – White Vinyl Record

Boris have used the title Heavy Rocks more than once, treating it less as a sequel marker than as a recurring statement of purpose. The 2022 edition again asks how many forms “heavy” can take. Wata, Takeshi and Atsuo move through doom, psychedelic rock, hardcore speed, saxophone-driven chaos and vast noise without smoothing the transitions. The album’s identity comes from that volatility and from the trio’s ability to make each change feel physically committed.

“She Is Burning” begins with immediate forward motion, while “Cramper” introduces stranger textures and a guest appearance from saxophonist Kazuya Kondo. “My Name Is Blank” tightens the attack into a compact surge, and “Blah Blah Blah” lets repetition become abrasive and hypnotic. The first half continually changes its surface, yet Wata’s guitar tone and the force of Atsuo’s drums keep it recognizably Boris.

“Question 1” provides a brief hinge before “Nosferatou” stretches into a darker, more spacious form. The sequencing matters: short bursts make the longer pieces feel enormous, while the slow material gives the fast songs added impact when they return. Boris do not treat genre shifts as separate exercises. Drone, punk and hard rock coexist inside the same performance language.

“Ruins” and “Ghostly Imagination” push the record back toward velocity and unstable psychedelic color. “Chained” combines a strong central riff with the sense that the arrangement might break open at any moment. “(not) Last Song” closes more reflectively, allowing melody and sustained sound to hang in the air after the preceding impact. It is a thoughtful ending to an album built around constant movement.

This Relapse Records edition is pressed on white vinyl and carries catalog number RR7526-1. It contains all ten tracks from the 2022 Heavy Rocks album and should not be confused with the different Boris records issued under the same title in 2002 and 2011. The clear year designation, white disc and current artwork identify the exact program for collectors navigating those deliberately repeated titles.

Brand new, never played and still sealed in the factory plastic
