Description
Carmell Jones – The Remarkable Carmell Jones – 180 Gram Blue Note Tone Poet Vinyl Record
The Remarkable Carmell Jones introduced the Kansas City trumpeter as a leader in 1961. Recorded for Pacific Jazz, the album surrounds his warm, confident horn with Harold Land, Frank Strazzeri, Gary Peacock and Leon Pettis.
Jones arrived in Los Angeles with strong bebop foundations and a tone capable of both brightness and restraint. His playing on “I’m Gonna Go Fishin’” establishes authority without crowding the melody.
Land’s tenor gives the front line depth, and their exchanges make the session feel conversational rather than competitive. Strazzeri’s piano and Peacock’s bass keep the harmony flexible beneath the horn writing.
The program includes originals alongside material by Duke Ellington and others. Ballad passages reveal Jones’s control of breath and pacing, while the quicker pieces show crisp articulation and a strong sense of swing.
Jones would soon record with Horace Silver and Gerald Wilson before moving to Europe. This debut preserves his voice at the beginning of that path, already mature and recognizable.
This Tone Poet pressing brings the Pacific Jazz title into Blue Note’s audiophile reissue series with 180-gram vinyl and deluxe packaging. It is an overdue presentation of a remarkably assured first album.
Brand new, never played and still sealed in the factory plastic
