To Shiver the Sky is Christopher Tin’s large-scale choral work about humanity’s desire to fly. Recorded with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Opera Chorus, and international soloists, the 2020 album sets texts spanning Leonardo da Vinci, early aviation, wartime flight, space exploration, and John F. Kennedy’s moon speech.

The opening “Sogno di Volare,” first known as the theme for Civilization VI, uses Leonardo’s words to establish flight as imagination before technology. “The Heavenly Kingdom,” “Daedalus and Icarus,” and “The Fall” then connect aspiration with myth, danger, and the limits of human control.

“Astronomy” and “To the Stars” expand the musical scale, combining large chorus, orchestra, and solo voices. Tin writes in an accessible cinematic language, but the multilingual texts and historical progression give the album a structure closer to an oratorio than a soundtrack compilation.

“Oh, the Humanity,” “Courage,” and “Become Death” confront catastrophe and war, while “The Power of the Spirit” and “We Choose to Go to the Moon” turn toward collective ambition. The closing Kennedy text provides a public, forward-looking counterpart to the private dream of the opening.

This double-vinyl edition contains all eleven movements. The two-record format preserves the complete choral narrative, performed by the named orchestral and vocal forces rather than a reduced suite.
