Coldplay – Prospekt’s March – Vinyl Record
Prospekt's March opens another door into the period that produced Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends. Released in late 2008, Coldplay's eight-track EP brings additional songs from that creative stretch together with new versions of two pieces associated with the album. It is a concise companion to Viva la Vida, with room for large arrangements, a short piano miniature, and a quieter closing song. Chris Martin, Jonny Buckland, Guy Berryman, and Will Champion give the material the same recognizable band identity, even when individual tracks move toward different musical settings.
Life in Technicolor ii turns the instrumental idea heard at the beginning of Viva la Vida into a complete song with a vocal and chorus. The familiar musical figure makes the connection easy to hear, while the new shape lets it stand on its own. Postcards from Far Away then offers a brief piano passage before Glass of Water expands the sound again. Those contrasts are useful within a short release: Coldplay can move from a spare interlude into a full-band performance without asking every selection to occupy the same amount of space.
Rainy Day brings another arrangement style into the EP, with rhythmic and orchestral colors contributing to its character. Prospekt's March / Poppyfields gives the title piece room for a more reflective atmosphere. The band had been stretching its musical vocabulary during the Viva la Vida sessions, and these songs make that exploration easier to hear beyond the main album. A guitar figure, a keyboard sound, or a change in the vocal setting can alter the mood substantially. The melodies still provide a clear route into the music even when the surrounding detail becomes more elaborate.
Lost+ introduces Jay-Z into a song already familiar from Viva la Vida, adding a rap contribution to its existing musical frame. Lovers in Japan appears in the Osaka Sun Mix, giving the EP another explicit connection to the album while distinguishing the version included here. Those two tracks belong beside the additional songs because they show the band still working with material from the same period. The release is partly about what else those sessions produced and partly about how an established song could take on another form after the album was finished.
Now My Feet Won't Touch the Ground brings the program to a quieter close, returning the attention to melody and voice after the larger arrangements. Prospekt's March is particularly useful for listeners interested in Coldplay's 2008 work because it keeps these eight selections together as a release of their own. Life in Technicolor ii and Glass of Water provide the more expansive band performances, while the miniature and closing song reveal another scale of writing. The EP broadens the picture of that period without losing the connection to the album that first introduced its musical setting.
Brand new, never played and still sealed in the factory plastic
