comm.venus – The Uneventful Vacation – RSD Red and Black Smoke Vinyl Record
Commander Venus’s The Uneventful Vacation, released on July 8, 1997, stands as a pivotal entry in the 1990s emo and indie rock scenes. This album is particularly notable for featuring a young Conor Oberst—who would later gain prominence with Bright Eyes—and Tim Kasher, who would go on to front Cursive. The band’s lineup also included Robb Nansel, now president of Saddle Creek Records, and Matt Bowen, who later joined The Faint. Recorded during the summer of the members’ junior year in high school, the album captures the raw energy and introspection characteristic of the era’s emo movement.
Musically, The Uneventful Vacation blends earnest lyricism with dynamic instrumentation, reflecting the youthful exuberance and emotional depth of its creators. Tracks like “Jean’s TV” and “Lock ‘n’ Chase” showcase the band’s ability to intertwine melodic hooks with poignant themes. The album’s production, while unpolished, adds to its authentic and heartfelt appeal.
In 2022, to commemorate the album’s 25th anniversary, a special edition was released featuring red and black smoke vinyl and all-analog mastering from the original tapes by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio. This reissue also includes the bonus track “Congratulations!” which appeared on the original vinyl release.
The Uneventful Vacation remains a significant artifact in the evolution of its members’ musical careers and the broader indie rock landscape. For fans interested in exploring the roots of early emo and the formative works of artists like Oberst and Kasher, this album offers valuable insights.
