David LaFlamme – Whitebird – Vinyl Record
“White Bird” is the signature song of David LaFlamme, best known as the lead vocalist and electric violinist for the San Francisco-based psychedelic rock band It’s a Beautiful Day. Originally released in 1969 on the band’s self-titled debut album, “White Bird” became an enduring anthem of the late 1960s counterculture — ethereal, melancholic, and soaring, just like the imagery it evokes.
David LaFlamme co-wrote “White Bird” with his wife at the time, Linda LaFlamme, while the band was living under strained circumstances in Seattle. They were managed by Matthew Katz, who also managed Jefferson Airplane and Moby Grape, and he housed them in a gloomy attic apartment. The song’s famous metaphor — “white bird in a golden cage” — came directly from this feeling of being creatively and emotionally confined despite the vibrant dreams of artistic freedom.
The lyrics are poetic and symbolic, reflecting themes of isolation, longing, and the desire for liberation — emotions that resonated deeply with the youth of the time. The iconic chorus: “White bird must fly / Or she will die…” became a kind of quiet anthem for spiritual freedom and nonconformity during the height of the hippie era.
Musically, “White Bird” is defined by David LaFlamme’s electric violin, which was groundbreaking in a rock setting at the time. The song combines elements of psychedelic rock, folk, and classical music, creating a lush, atmospheric sound that stands out even among other 1960s psych-rock compositions. The vocal harmonies, sweeping violin lines, and dynamic shifts give it a cinematic, almost transcendental quality.
After It’s a Beautiful Day’s original run, LaFlamme later recorded solo versions of “White Bird,” most notably for his 1976 album White Bird, released under his own name. This version was more radio-friendly and featured smoother production, but retained the emotional core of the original. It gained popularity on FM radio in the 1970s and introduced the song to a new audience, further cementing its place in rock history.
“White Bird” has since become a staple of classic rock and psychedelic playlists. It’s been covered by numerous artists and remains a high point in discussions of late-’60s San Francisco music alongside Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver Messenger Service, and Grateful Dead.
David LaFlamme’s “White Bird” is more than a song — it’s a poetic statement from an era of idealism and transformation. Whether through the original version’s haunting psychedelia or the solo take’s polished grace, its message still resonates today.

Way back in 1969, a haunting little song called White Bird could be heard on just about every classic-rock radio station across North America. The song is intrinsically linked to this band, brainchild of David LaFlamme, a virtuoso violinist who frequently jammed alongside the likes of Jerry Garcia and Janis Joplin. Their original line-up included Patti Santos on vocals, Davids own wife Linda LaFlamme on keyboards, Hal Wagenet on guitar, Mitchell Holman on bass and Val Fluentes on drums.
