Death Cab for Cutie’s The Georgia EP, originally released in December 2020, is a short but meaningful collection of five cover songs—each chosen as a tribute to Georgia-based artists and released as a fundraiser to support Fair Fight Action, an organization founded by Stacey Abrams to promote fair elections and combat voter suppression, especially during the pivotal 2021 Georgia Senate runoffs.
This EP represents a blend of political engagement and artistic admiration, with Death Cab for Cutie reinterpreting songs from a wide range of Georgia’s musical history. The band’s thoughtful approach brings their signature melancholic indie-rock style to a tracklist that spans hip-hop, soul, pop, and alternative rock. Initially released as a Bandcamp exclusive for just 24 hours, The Georgia EP later became available on streaming services in March 2021 due to fan demand, furthering its impact both musically and politically.

“Waterfalls” – Originally by TLC, this cover transforms the 1995 R&B classic into a slow-burning, ambient meditation. Rather than mimic TLC’s sultry groove, Death Cab frontman Ben Gibbard strips it down to a haunting, acoustic-driven ballad, emphasizing the song’s lyrical depth and tragic poignancy. It’s a respectful and emotionally resonant reimagining.
“The King of Carrot Flowers, Pt. 1” – Originally by Neutral Milk Hotel, this track nods to one of the most beloved cult acts from Athens, Georgia. Death Cab’s version is relatively faithful but filters the raw emotion of the original through Gibbard’s wistful, ethereal lens.
“Fall on Me” – A moving tribute to R.E.M., this cover draws a straight line between the band’s Athens, GA indie rock legacy and Death Cab’s own evolution. The rendition retains the yearning and environmental urgency of the original while embracing a more atmospheric and textured approach.
“Flirted With You All My Life” – Originally by Vic Chesnutt, one of Athens’ most revered singer-songwriters, this is perhaps the emotional centerpiece of the EP.
