Do’ah’s World Dance, released in 1988 under Global Pacific Records, is a standout work in the realms of New Age and world fusion music. The album is the creation of the talented duo Ken LaRoche and Randy Armstrong, whose collaborative vision brings together diverse musical traditions from around the globe. This release is both a celebration of global unity and a profound exploration of the interconnectedness of music across cultures.

Recorded in 1987 and released in 1988, this album was originally distributed by CBS and reached the top 10 of several national charts including #7 in Billboards Adult Contemporary chart. With the release of this album Do a added the letter h to the name to make it easier to pronounce and not to disappoint the fans of D.O.A., the popular punk-rock band also touring the U.S. at the same time.

Featuring the composing and arranging of Randy Armstrong and Ken LaRoche this quintet album showcases a suite in three movements by Randy Armstrong composed for the 1986 United Nations International Year of Peace and the song Wayo composed by Ken LaRoche which received the most radio airplay of any DOAH WORLD MUSIC ENSEMBLE song and was featured on Entertainment Tonight.

The album’s tracklist includes six pieces, each offering a unique narrative and mood. Tracks such as “Wayo” and “Night-Season” showcase intricate melodies and rhythmic layers, weaving together instruments like flutes, sitars, and percussion in harmonious interplay. “Moth-Like Lovers of the Light” and “The Awakening” delve deeper into introspective and atmospheric compositions, creating a sense of spiritual uplift and inner reflection. The centerpiece, “World Dance,” is an energetic and celebratory track that captures the essence of the album’s title, bringing together vibrant rhythms and melodies that inspire movement and joy. “19 Letters (19 Beat Cycle)” highlights the duo’s technical prowess, featuring complex rhythms inspired by global time signatures and traditional forms.

World Dance was recorded and mixed at Blue Jay Recording Studio in Carlisle, Massachusetts, ensuring a high-quality production that highlights the intricate details of the music. Digital transfers were handled by Northeastern Digital Recorders, and the album was mastered at K-Disc, ensuring a polished and immersive listening experience. The visual presentation of the album also reflects its thematic richness, with Michael Hollyfield providing art direction, Robin Chandler contributing evocative collage artwork, and Howard Morris coordinating the project.

This album exemplifies the New Age movement’s ability to embrace global musical traditions while creating something deeply personal and innovative. World Dance has remained a favorite among fans of meditative and cross-cultural music. For those seeking music that bridges cultural divides and fosters a sense of unity through sound, World Dance is a profound and essential listening experience. Its seamless fusion of global influences with a calming, reflective atmosphere makes it a standout release in Do’ah’s discography and the broader New Age genre.
