Don Cherry – Where Is Brooklyn? – 180 Gram Vinyl Record

Where Is Brooklyn? captures Don Cherry in 1966 with a quartet capable of moving between open improvisation and sharply defined themes. Pharoah Sanders plays tenor saxophone and piccolo, Henry Grimes is on bass, and Ed Blackwell brings the rhythmic imagination that had already shaped Cherry’s work with Ornette Coleman.

“Awake Nu” opens with a concise theme before the quartet pulls it apart and rebuilds it through collective motion. Cherry’s cornet has a bright, vocal attack, while Sanders answers with a broader and more abrasive sound that enlarges the music without overwhelming it.

The title track is playful and urgent at once. Grimes and Blackwell create momentum without locking the horns into a fixed pattern, allowing Cherry and Sanders to change density, register, and direction as the performance unfolds.

“The Thing,” “There Is the Bomb,” and “Unite” complete a short but demanding program. The album’s freedom is disciplined: recurring figures and rhythmic cues give the players a shared structure even when the harmony becomes completely open.

This vinyl edition presents all five selections from the original Blue Note album. Where Is Brooklyn? remains a vivid entry point into Cherry’s mid-1960s work, combining the force of free jazz with melodic fragments and rhythmic ideas that make repeated listening especially rewarding.

Brand new, never played and still sealed in the factory plastic
