Electric Wizard – Wizard Bloody Wizard – 180 Gram Vinyl Record

Released on November 17, 2017, Wizard Bloody Wizard is the ninth studio album by Electric Wizard, the British doom metal band known for their ultra-heavy, Sabbath-worshipping riffs, occult themes, and dark, psychedelic atmosphere. The title is an obvious nod to Black Sabbath’s Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (1973), signaling the band’s continued reverence for the pioneers of doom metal, though this album takes a slightly different approach than their earlier, more suffocatingly heavy records.

Compared to the crushing, suffocating soundscapes of Dopethrone (2000) and Come My Fanatics… (1997), Wizard Bloody Wizard adopts a more stripped-down, raw rock ‘n’ roll feel, channeling classic proto-metal, psychedelic rock, and 1970s horror aesthetics rather than the overwhelming fuzz and distortion that defined their earlier work. The production is deliberately lo-fi and vintage-sounding, evoking the spirit of early Black Sabbath, Blue Cheer, and Pentagram, with a greater emphasis on groove, bluesy riffs, and sleazy, grimy lyrics.

The album opens with “See You in Hell,” a slow-burning, blues-infused doom track that sets the tone with its dirty, hypnotic riffing and eerie, reverb-soaked vocals from Jus Oborn. “Necromania” follows with a gritty, almost punk-like energy, showcasing shorter, more direct song structures than the band’s previous epics. “Hear the Sirens Scream” and “Wicked Caresses” continue the album’s dirty, low-slung groove, embracing a more straightforward, sleazy hard rock feel, while “Mourning of the Magicians” closes the album in a slow, doomy haze, bringing back some of the ritualistic, occult atmospheres Electric Wizard is known for.

While Wizard Bloody Wizard received mixed reactions from longtime fans, with some disappointed by the less crushing, more rock-oriented sound, others appreciated its raw, garage-doom aesthetic and unapologetic embrace of vintage hard rock influences. It stands as one of the band’s most divisive yet intriguing releases, showcasing their ability to evolve while maintaining their core doom ethos. For those looking for a blend of classic stoner rock, occult horror vibes, and Electric Wizard’s signature sleaze, Wizard Bloody Wizard offers a grim, hypnotic, and dirty descent into doom.
