Franz Ferdinand – Tonight: Franz Ferdinand – Double Vinyl Record
Franz Ferdinand's Tonight follows the excitement of a night out into the less tidy hours that come afterward. Released in 2009, the band's third album brings a stronger electronic presence to its guitar-driven dance music, working with producer Dan Carey to explore bass, rhythm, and keyboard color. Alex Kapranos still has the sharply drawn vocal delivery that helped define the earlier records, but the musical setting gives him different ways to inhabit a song. The twelve-track album is interested in what happens once a party has begun, when confidence, attraction, and uncertainty can become difficult to separate.
Ulysses establishes the mood with a bass-led setting and a vocal that can sound conspiratorial before opening outward. No You Girls gives the album another immediate point of entry, putting an especially clear hook inside the band's rhythmic machinery. Turn It On and Send Him Away show other sides of that approach. Franz Ferdinand had always written music that invited movement; Tonight lets the rhythm become a larger part of the arrangement itself. A keyboard line or a bass figure can carry the identity of a track as strongly as the angular guitars associated with the debut.
The original quartet remains central to the performance: Kapranos, guitarist Nick McCarthy, bassist Bob Hardy, and drummer Paul Thomson. Their playing gives the electronic sounds a band setting rather than treating them as a separate layer added afterward. The musicians can leave room for a repeating figure, then alter its impact with a guitar entrance or a change in the drums. Dan Carey's production makes space for those choices. The sound has enough precision for the dance-oriented material while retaining the small tensions and exchanges that make a group performance interesting.
Twilight Omens, Bite Hard, and What She Came For carry that mixture into different moods, while Live Alone gives the record a more solitary perspective. Can't Stop Feeling pushes back toward an insistent rhythm, and Lucid Dreams allows the electronic side of the album greater room to develop. These shifts fit the record's nighttime idea without requiring a literal story to explain every song. The same evening can contain anticipation, attraction, a moment of bravado, and a feeling of distance. Kapranos' voice connects those states, sometimes sounding assured and sometimes considerably less settled.
Dream Again and Katherine Kiss Me bring the album toward a quieter finish, with the latter returning to a situation heard from another angle in No You Girls. That change in perspective is a fitting end to a record interested in what excitement looks like once it has had time to subside. Tonight remains recognizably Franz Ferdinand, but its expanded electronic vocabulary and attention to the hours around a night out give it a distinct place in the band's catalog. The songs retain the direct melodies and rhythmic pull of the earlier work while finding a different atmosphere around them.
Brand new, never played and still sealed in the factory plastic
