Friends: Original Television Soundtrack returns the music associated with the first season of the landmark television comedy in a colorful twenty-fifth-anniversary vinyl edition. The collection mixes the instantly recognizable Rembrandts theme with alternative rock, pop, folk, and singer-songwriter recordings that evoke the sound of mid-1990s radio. Dialogue woven into selected tracks keeps the program connected to Monica, Rachel, Phoebe, Ross, Chandler, and Joey rather than presenting an ordinary period compilation.

The opening side establishes that connection with the television version of “I’ll Be There for You,” complete with dialogue, before moving into Hootie & the Blowfish’s “I Go Blind.” Toad the Wet Sprocket’s “Good Intentions,” Lou Reed’s reflective “You’ll Know You Were Loved,” and k.d. lang’s “Sexuality” show how comfortably the soundtrack moves from buoyant guitar pop to more adult and idiosyncratic voices. The sequencing feels like a capsule of the series’ earliest cultural moment.

Side two turns to Barenaked Ladies, R.E.M., Paul Westerberg, and Pretenders. “Shoebox” carries the witty nervous energy that suited the show’s young New Yorkers, while “It’s a Free World Baby” provides an R.E.M. rarity framed by cast dialogue. Westerberg’s “Sunshine” and Pretenders’ version of “Angel of the Morning” broaden the emotional range, balancing humor with the romantic uncertainty and restless optimism that repeatedly shaped the program’s stories.

The third playable side begins with Grant Lee Buffalo’s intimate “In My Room,” then revisits Joni Mitchell’s “Big Yellow Taxi” in a traffic-jam mix. Westerberg returns with “Stain Yer Blood,” and the Rembrandts close the musical program with the long version of the theme, including its hidden material and dialogue. Because the selections preserve their soundtrack-specific edits, this edition offers a different listening experience from assembling the artists’ standard album versions separately.
