Godsmack – 1000hp – Vinyl Record
Godsmack’s 1000hp is a direct, hard-hitting album built around the band’s live identity. Released in 2014, it looks back at the group’s path from small Massachusetts rooms to arena stages while keeping the focus on thick guitar riffs, Sully Erna’s commanding vocal and a rhythm section designed to hit with maximum clarity. The album followed 2010’s The Oracle and found the group celebrating roughly two decades of shared history. Rather than reinventing its foundation, Godsmack concentrates on the qualities that made the band durable: rhythmic authority, blunt hooks and a strong connection to live audiences.
The title track functions as both an origin story and a concert-ready anthem, moving from memories of the band’s beginnings into a massive chorus. “FML” follows with a darker groove, while “Something Different” uses space and melody to broaden the album’s emotional range without abandoning its weight. Erna’s lyrics mix autobiography with the defensive, self-reliant stance familiar from earlier records. The best moments sound earned rather than generic because the vocal delivery carries the wear of years on the road as well as the confidence of commercial success.
“What’s Next?” and “Generation Day” give the first half a restless, forward-driving quality. On the second side, “Locked & Loaded” and “Living in the Gray” return to the muscular attack associated with the band’s earlier work, and “I Don’t Belong” sharpens the sense of defiance. There is more range than the title song alone might suggest. “Something Different” and “Generation Day” allow melody and atmosphere to develop, while the heavier cuts keep the record tied to the band’s post-grunge and alternative-metal roots.
The production keeps every element separated and forceful. Tony Rombola’s guitars carry both crunch and detail, Robbie Merrill’s bass adds density, and Shannon Larkin’s drumming gives the songs a physical swing beneath their hard-rock surface. The album sounds polished, but the performances retain the feel of a working touring band. Larkin’s drumming is a major source of that range. He can drive a straight arena-rock chorus, add syncopation beneath a riff or open space around a vocal phrase without weakening the track. That flexibility keeps the ten-song program from feeling mechanically uniform.
This Republic Records vinyl edition contains the complete ten-track album, ending with “Nothing Comes Easy” and the slower-burning “Turning to Stone.” It is a strong choice for Godsmack fans who want the band’s 2010s catalog on LP and for listeners drawn to concise, riff-centered American hard rock. The LP sequence divides naturally after “Generation Day,” with the second side emphasizing heavier, more inward-looking material before the closing track slows the pace. It is a satisfying physical-album arrangement rather than a playlist assembled around one successful single.
