Grachan Moncur III – Evolution – 180 Gram Vinyl Record

Evolution brings Grachan Moncur III’s writing and trombone playing to the center of a sextet whose unusual instrumentation is integral to the music. Recorded in November 1963, his first album as a leader features Lee Morgan on trumpet, Jackie McLean on alto saxophone, Bobby Hutcherson on vibraphone, Bob Cranshaw on bass and Tony Williams on drums. There is no piano, allowing the vibraphone to supply a different kind of harmonic color around the three horns. Moncur wrote all four compositions, giving the session a consistent viewpoint even as the pieces move between more open passages and clearly shaped ensemble material. The album is an important example of Blue Note’s early-1960s exploration beyond conventional hard-bop structures.

Moncur had already contributed to Herbie Hancock’s My Point of View and to McLean’s One Step Beyond and Destination… Out! earlier in 1963. The McLean sessions were particularly important settings for his compositions, establishing a musical relationship that continues on Evolution. Hutcherson and Williams also return from that circle of players, while Morgan and Cranshaw add further voices to Moncur’s leader date. Those connections help explain the ensemble’s ability to work inside music that leaves different kinds of space available. The album does not simply place a trombone soloist in front of a standard accompaniment. Moncur’s writing gives each instrument a role within a more distinctive group sound.

Air Raid and the title composition occupy the first side, with substantial room for the sextet to develop their atmosphere and internal contrasts. The trombone’s lower register gives Moncur a different presence from Morgan’s trumpet and McLean’s alto, making the front line a meeting of three clearly differentiated colors. Hutcherson’s vibraphone adds both ringing sustain and precisely placed attacks around them. The title piece’s extended scale encourages attention to those relationships, especially when a sustained sound, an entrance or an interval between phrases changes the mood. Moncur’s compositions allow the players’ individual identities to remain audible while keeping the ensemble’s shape central to the performance.

The Coaster and Monk in Wonderland complete the second side. Their titles sit within a program whose four pieces give the group time to explore each musical setting in depth. Williams and Cranshaw are essential to that flexibility: bass and drums can support a passage while also helping determine its direction and intensity. Without a piano continuously defining the harmony, the interaction between bass, vibraphone and horns takes on particular importance. The music can retain a connection to swinging jazz while allowing phrasing and texture to move into less predictable territory. That relationship between recognizable foundations and more open possibilities is a defining aspect of the record’s post-bop and avant-garde character.

Evolution is especially revealing for listeners following Morgan or McLean beyond their more familiar small-group recordings. Moncur’s compositions give both musicians a framework that differs from a conventional two-horn quintet, while Hutcherson and Williams contribute to the album’s sense of space and responsiveness. The trombone is the leader’s voice, but the writing makes the full sextet essential to the result. This stereo Blue Note Classic Vinyl Series edition presents the original four-composition album on 180-gram vinyl, mastered all-analog by Kevin Gray from the original master tapes and pressed at Optimal. The record preserves a focused statement from Moncur at the beginning of his work as a leader, with a sound shaped as much by composition as by instrumental individuality.
