Grateful Dead – Gratest Hits – Target Exclusive Spring Green Vinyl Record
For a band famous for playing songs differently every night, the Grateful Dead also made studio recordings that stand on their own. Gratest Hits brings nine of those recordings together, moving from the rootsy songwriting of 1970 to the band's later radio breakthrough. Released during the Dead's sixtieth-anniversary year, it is a compact introduction to the songs behind the concert mythology. This Target edition puts the collection on Spring Green vinyl, with five selections on the first side and four on the second.
The first side belongs largely to the Dead's particularly fertile 1970 period. “Casey Jones,” from Workingman's Dead, leads into four songs from American Beauty: “Friend of the Devil,” “Box of Rain,” “Sugar Magnolia,” and “Truckin'.” Hearing them together brings the band's interest in American song traditions into focus. Acoustic textures, vocal harmonies, and country inflections sit alongside electric guitars, giving these songs a warmth that reaches well beyond the San Francisco psychedelic scene from which the group emerged.
American Beauty takes up a substantial part of the record for good reason. Its songs reveal several sides of the band, from the winding storytelling of “Friend of the Devil” to the reflective “Box of Rain” and the easy confidence of “Sugar Magnolia.” “Truckin'” supplies the road song that has become inseparable from the Dead's identity. The compilation leaves enough room for that album's range to come through without turning the whole release into an abbreviated reissue of American Beauty.
The second side covers a wider stretch of time. “Scarlet Begonias” comes from From the Mars Hotel, “Fire on the Mountain” from Shakedown Street, and “Estimated Prophet” from Terrapin Station. Together they move beyond the folk and country emphasis of the opening side into a more rhythmically varied part of the catalog. “Touch of Grey,” from In the Dark, closes the program with the song that carried the Dead to a much broader audience in the late 1980s.
Gratest Hits makes sense for someone who knows a few of these songs and wants to follow the connections between them. It also offers longtime listeners a straightforward studio selection, with no concert recordings or extended live improvisations added to the running order. The Spring Green pressing is the distinguishing feature of this particular version; its nine-song program remains focused on the original studio material. From “Casey Jones” to “Touch of Grey,” the record keeps the songwriting at the center of the band's long story.
