The Phoenix is the second remix album by the American alternative rock band Grey Daze, released on June 17, 2022 through Loma Vista Recordings and Concord Records. It follows their 2020 project Amends, which similarly paired the band’s 1990s recordings with newly recorded music—so The Phoenix continues the effort to both preserve and revitalize the early work of the band’s original vocalist Chester Bennington, who would later become globally famous as the frontman of Linkin Park.
What makes The Phoenix unique is its blend of nostalgia and reinvention: it uses Bennington’s original vocal tracks from the mid‑’90s and surrounds them with fresh instrumental recordings created by the surviving members of Grey Daze and today’s lineup, giving the material new life while keeping the raw emotional power of the original performances. Many of the songs were drawn from the band’s early indie releases Wake Me (1994) and …No Sun Today (1997) but were reshaped with modern production and dynamics.
The album sits at the intersection of grunge, alternative rock, and post‑grunge, reflecting the band’s roots in the 1990s Arizona scene while also embracing a fuller, more polished sound. Tracks like “Saturation (Strange Love)”, “Starting to Fly”, and “Holding You” showcase gritty guitar work, melodic hooks, and Bennington’s voice—still powerful and expressive even in these older recordings—front and center.
The Phoenix also features notable guest contributions: guitarist Dave Navarro (of Jane’s Addiction) adds a striking solo on “Holding You,” Richard Patrick (of Filter) lends vocals to “Believe Me,” and Bennington’s twin daughters, Lily and Lila, provide additional vocals on “Hole,” which adds both emotional depth and a genuine sense of family tribute to the project.
The Phoenix functions as both a tribute and a resurrection—a chance for Grey Daze to complete and celebrate the musical legacy Chester Bennington began long before his mainstream success. While rooted in the band’s earliest material, the remix approach gives the music a contemporary edge that honors its origins while making it accessible for new listeners.
