Hank Mobley – Soul Station – 180 Gram Blue Vinyl Record

Soul Station is Hank Mobley’s first Blue Note album recorded as the sole horn in a quartet, and the open setting makes every detail of his tenor style audible. Recorded in February 1960, Mobley is joined by pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Art Blakey. The rhythm section had deep experience with Miles Davis and the Jazz Messengers, but its purpose here is not to overpower the leader; it gives his relaxed, carefully balanced phrases a remarkably responsive foundation.

Irving Berlin’s “Remember” opens with an easy swing and a familiar melody that Mobley reshapes through small rhythmic displacements. “This I Dig of You” is one of his most memorable originals, its compact theme leading to a solo that combines blues feeling with clean bebop logic. “Dig Dis” has a tougher rhythmic edge, and Kelly’s piano responses make the quartet sound conversational even at its most driving.

“Split Feelin’s” begins the second side with another Mobley line built to generate forward motion. The title track is an extended blues, but its length never becomes static. Mobley varies attack, register, and phrase size while Chambers and Blakey subtly change the pressure underneath him. Kelly’s solo demonstrates the light touch and deep pocket that made him an ideal partner for both singers and horn players.

The standard “If I Should Lose You” closes the album with lyrical clarity. Mobley’s sound sits between the heavier projection of some hard-bop tenors and the airy approach associated with cool jazz. That middleweight tone is not a compromise; it allows him to move naturally between blues, ballad, and fast linear playing without changing his identity.

This edition presses the original six-track album on 180-gram blue vinyl. UPC 602465117400 identifies the colored pressing, distinguishing it from standard black-vinyl reissues and compact discs with additional takes. The classic single-LP sequence remains intact from “Remember” through “If I Should Lose You.”

Brand new, never played and still sealed in the factory plastic
