James Blake – Friends That Break Your Heart – Vinyl Record
Friends That Break Your Heart turns James Blake’s attention toward losses that popular music often leaves unnamed: the end of friendships, changing creative relationships, and the way intimacy can disappear without the rituals associated with a romantic breakup. Released in 2021, the album combines Blake’s piano-centered songwriting with the electronic detail, altered vocals, and low-frequency space that have defined his work since his earliest recordings.
“Famous Last Words” opens with a voice already bracing for distance. “Life Is Not the Same,” produced with Joji collaborator Take a Daytrip, sets Blake’s plaintive melody against a heavier rhythmic frame. “Coming Back” pairs him with SZA, whose flexible phrasing makes the song feel like a conversation between people uncertain whether returning is possible. “Funeral” then strips the sound back to grief and piano.
“Frozen” brings in JID and SwaVay for the album’s sharpest rap collaboration, creating tension between Blake’s suspended harmonies and more percussive vocal flows. “I’m So Blessed You’re Mine” and “Foot Forward” consider gratitude and persistence without resolving the insecurity around them. Monica Martin’s presence on “Show Me” adds another contrasting voice to Blake’s inward delivery.
“Say What You Will” is the record’s central statement about comparison and self-worth, its gradual build carrying a lyric that accepts another person’s success without erasing private doubt. “Lost Angel Nights” and the title track return to absence and broken trust. “If I’m Insecure” closes by naming the vulnerability that has run beneath the entire sequence.
This Republic Records vinyl edition presents the complete 12-track album and is identified by UPC 602438423132. The physical sequence retains every featured performance and moves from the unsettled opening through the exposed final question. It is the standard album program rather than a later expanded digital edition.
Brand new, never played and still sealed in the factory plastic
