Jeanie Stahl – I’m Just Foolin Myself – Vinyl Record

I’m Just Foolin’ Myself is an album by Jeanie Stahl, an American folk and jazz singer known for her smooth, expressive voice and her work in the folk scene, particularly during the 1970s and 1980s. Released in 1987, this album showcases Stahl’s versatility as a vocalist, blending elements of folk, jazz, and pop into a cohesive and engaging collection of songs. Jeanie Stahl gained recognition both as a solo artist and as part of a duo with guitarist and songwriter Guy Van Duser.

Jeanie Stahl emerged as a prominent figure in the New England folk scene in the 1970s, known for her clear, warm vocals and her ability to cross genres with ease. Her collaborations with Guy Van Duser, a talented guitarist, and arranger, brought her music to a wider audience. Together, they became known for their intricate arrangements and Stahl’s heartfelt vocal delivery. ‘I’m Just Foolin’ Myself’ reflects Stahl’s ability to interpret a wide range of material, from jazz standards to contemporary folk songs, all delivered with her distinctive voice.

Marblehead, Massachusetts-based songstress Jeanie Stahl was on the crest of a promising solo career, in 1983, when a tragic wind surfing accident prevented her from performing for two years. Although she had just released her debut solo album, Im Just Fooling Myself, Stahl was left healing her wounds as the album went largely un-promoted. While Stahl subsequently resumed her career, much of the momentum was lost.

Stahl first attracted attention in a duo that she shared, in the late-1970s and early-80s, with multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and producer Mason Daring. Besides collaborating on two albums – Sweet Melodies In The Night, Heartbreak and The Early Years – Stahl and Daring recorded Darings soundtracks for several John Sayles-directed films. The Early Years, released in 1992, samples tracks from their two albums and movie soundtracks. In addition to performing frequently at New England folk music clubs and coffeehouses, the duo periodically joined with Bill Staines, Guy Van Duser and Billy Novick in the folk super-group, The Passim All-Stars.

With the increase demand for Darings time as a producer and soundtrack composer, Stahl began to perform as a soloist in the early-1980s. Although she’s turned the songs of such songwriters as Gordon Lightfoot, Robin Batteau and Randy Newman into heartfelt experiences, Stahl remains as effective singing jazz standards from the 1930s and 1940s.

I’m Just Foolin’ Myself is characterized by its blend of folk, jazz, and pop influences, with a focus on classic songs and standards that highlight Jeanie Stahl’s vocal abilities. The album’s themes might revolve around love, introspection, and the complexities of human relationships, delivered with a mix of warmth, sophistication, and emotional depth.

Musically, the album features a mix of acoustic and jazz instrumentation, with arrangements that support Stahl’s voice without overpowering it. The production would likely be clean and polished, emphasizing the clarity of her vocals and the subtlety of the arrangements.

Jeanie Stahl’s I’m Just Foolin’ Myself is appreciated by fans of both folk and jazz music, particularly those who enjoy vocal-driven albums that focus on interpretation and emotional expression. Stahl’s ability to cross genres would have broadened the album’s appeal, attracting listeners who appreciate both the intimacy of folk and the sophistication of jazz.

The album solidified Stahl’s reputation as a talented and versatile vocalist. Her interpretations of classic songs would have resonated with audiences who value authenticity and emotional depth in music.

I’m Just Foolin’ Myself remains an important album in Jeanie Stahl’s discography, showcasing her ability to blend folk and jazz influences into a cohesive and engaging listening experience. The album is a testament to her skill as an interpreter of songs, bringing new life to classic material through her warm, expressive voice.

For fans of vocal jazz and folk, I’m Just Foolin’ Myself offers a rich, rewarding listening experience, highlighting Stahl’s unique ability to convey emotion and nuance through her music. The album continues to be appreciated by those who value well-crafted, heartfelt performances of timeless songs.
