Classic Objects brings Jenny Hval’s writing into a musical setting that is unusually open and inviting. The Norwegian musician and novelist released the album in 2022 as her first for 4AD, following The Practice of Love and her work with Håvard Volden in Lost Girls. Across eight songs, she explores identity, memory, domestic life and the uneasy relationship between private experience and public expectations. The subjects can be complicated, but the sound often feels light: clear vocals, supple percussion and arrangements with enough room for an image or a phrase to linger. Hval lets the songs carry her questions without forcing them into neat conclusions.

“Year of Love” opens with a situation that is both ordinary and revealing, drawing on a marriage proposal witnessed during one of her performances. From there, the song considers how an artist’s work can acquire meanings she did not intend and how personal life can resist a firmly held position. That tension is characteristic of the album. Hval is interested in contradictions that remain part of a person rather than problems that can be solved once and put away. Her vocal delivery supports that approach, moving with a conversational freedom even when the melody is carefully formed. “American Coffee” expands the autobiographical thread through memories and observations that move between the physical and the imagined. The arrangements were developed with co-producer Kyrre Laastad, with contributions from musicians including Volden and percussionist Hans Hulbækmo. Guitar, keyboards, bass and percussion create a sound that can feel both grounded and airy. “Jupiter” is a particularly expansive example, moving from a quieter opening into a broader rhythmic and vocal setting. “Year of Sky,” “Freedom” and “The Revolution Will Not Be Owned” add further perspectives as the album unfolds. Hval’s voice remains clear within the ensemble, and the backing parts have distinct functions rather than simply filling the available space. The effect is well suited to lyrics that need room for a thought to develop or change direction. Heba Kadry handled mixing and mastering, helping bring the album’s varied instrumental textures together.
