Joe Henderson – Inner Urge – 180 Gram Vinyl Record

Inner Urge places Joe Henderson’s tenor saxophone alone at the front of a quartet with McCoy Tyner on piano, Bob Cranshaw on bass and Elvin Jones on drums. Recorded in November 1964, it was Henderson’s fourth Blue Note leader session and a change from the quintet settings of Page One, Our Thing and In ’n Out. Kenny Dorham had been an important partner on those earlier records; here, Henderson works without a second horn, giving his tenor a more exposed and sustained role. Tyner and Jones bring experience from John Coltrane’s quartet, while Cranshaw supplies a distinct bass presence. The result is a focused group sound with considerable rhythmic and harmonic strength.

The opening title composition is a substantial statement, giving Henderson a demanding setting for his melodic ideas and the rhythm section room to respond. Isotope follows on the first side with a different temperament, using the blues as a foundation and paying tribute to Thelonious Monk’s musical humor. Hearing the two together brings out the range within Henderson’s writing. The title track’s concentrated character and Isotope’s more playful turns do not require separate ensembles to make their contrast clear. Tyner’s piano and Jones’s drums can support Henderson while also contributing to the music’s changing energy, making the quartet a responsive conversation rather than a fixed background for the tenor.

El Barrio opens the second side and adds a Spanish-influenced character to the program. Its initial saxophone statement and the broader setting around it create another kind of space for Henderson’s voice. Alongside the title piece and Isotope, it completes a group of three originals that show different aspects of his compositional thinking. The distinction between them is important to the album’s appeal: Henderson is not repeating one musical situation across the entire record. The quartet moves through different relationships between written material, rhythmic feeling and improvisation, with Cranshaw’s bass, Tyner’s piano and Jones’s drums helping give each composition its own character beneath the same lead instrument.

Duke Pearson’s You Know I Care then supplies a ballad, placing greater attention on Henderson’s tone and the way he shapes an established melody. Cole Porter’s Night and Day closes the album at a brisker pace. These two borrowed compositions broaden the program without changing its basic focus on the tenor quartet. A ballad asks for a different sense of proportion from an extended original, and the final standard introduces a familiar point of reference after the more individual settings of Henderson’s writing. The contrast makes the album a strong account of his work as an interpreter as well as a composer, with the rhythm section adapting to each change in repertoire.

Inner Urge was recorded at Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs on November 30, 1964, with Alfred Lion producing. The personnel connect Henderson’s developing Blue Note work with musicians already deeply involved in the evolving language of modern jazz. Yet the program remains clearly his own: three originals establish contrasting moods before Pearson and Porter provide two further settings for his saxophone. This stereo Blue Note Classic Vinyl Series edition presents the original five-track album on 180-gram vinyl, mastered all-analog by Kevin Gray from the original master tapes and pressed at Optimal. It offers Henderson’s quartet in a concentrated program where the lone horn, powerful piano-and-drum partnership and clearly articulated bass each have an essential part in the music.
