John Carpenter – Lost Themes III: Alive After Death – Red Vinyl Record
A pulse, a melody, and the feeling that something might be approaching: John Carpenter can establish a world with surprisingly few elements. Lost Themes III: Alive After Death takes that instinct into ten original pieces written and performed with Cody Carpenter and Daniel Davies. The album appeared in 2021, continuing a project that lets Carpenter make music without being tied to a film's running time or plot. It still carries the atmosphere familiar from his scores, but the compositions can follow their own ideas and give the trio's developing sound the main role.
Davies' guitar is an important part of that development. Alongside the two Carpenters' synthesizers, it adds a physical edge to the music, sometimes reinforcing a motif and sometimes pushing against the electronic texture. The playing helps connect the album to rock without loosening its rhythmic discipline. Weeping Ghost makes the relationship especially clear: the synthesizers establish a driving frame, and the guitar gives that frame another level of intensity. What might initially sound like a keyboard theme becomes a performance by a group whose parts have distinct jobs and whose entrances change the shape of the piece.
The Dead Walk shows how readily this approach can open into a dance-oriented track. The title suggests a horror scene, while the beat makes its own invitation. Turning the Bones, Dripping Blood, and Dead Eyes continue the album's deliberately vivid naming, leaving listeners to supply whatever images suit the music. Carpenter has called this body of work Lost Themes, but the pieces are not fragments waiting for a missing movie to explain them. Their hooks, changes in texture, and sense of anticipation give them enough direction to work as compositions in their own right.
The players came to this third installment with several years of shared experience. Touring Carpenter's music had brought the trio onto stages, Anthology had revisited themes from his film career, and the 2018 Halloween score had returned them to one of his best-known cinematic worlds. Alive After Death benefits from that familiarity while giving them a different brief. They can let a rhythm persist, choose when a guitar should become the leading voice, or leave a keyboard figure exposed. The confidence comes through in decisions about space as much as in the more forceful moments.
Carpathian Darkness closes the record with a piano-centered piece, a useful reminder that Carpenter's musical identity does not depend on one synthesizer sound or one kind of tension. A spare melody can be as evocative as a densely layered passage. Heard alongside the harder-driving tracks, that ending gives Alive After Death a broader emotional range than its macabre titles might suggest. The album will be immediately familiar territory for followers of Carpenter's soundtrack work, while its clear motifs and guitar-synth interplay also make it approachable for listeners interested in instrumental electronic music. It captures the trio making an album together, with the imaginary cinema left open to the listener.
Brand new, never played and still sealed in the factory plastic
