John Williams with the Saito Kinen Orchestra – In Tokyo is a live concert album capturing a special performance by legendary film composer John Williams with Japan’s world‑renowned Saito Kinen Orchestra, released in 2024 by Deutsche Grammophon. It documents Williams’s return to Japan for the first time in 30 years, where he conducted the orchestra at Suntory Hall in Tokyo during a gala concert celebrating the 125th anniversary of the Deutsche Grammophon label. This release follows his acclaimed live concert albums The Berlin Concert and John Williams in Vienna and continues his distinguished series of concert recordings.
The album features live renditions of many of John Williams’s most iconic film themes, arranged for full orchestra and conducted by Williams himself, with Stéphane Denève also conducting a special bonus track. The set includes beloved pieces such as the “Superman March” (from Superman), “Hedwig’s Theme” and “Fawkes the Phoenix” (from the Harry Potter films), the “Theme from Schindler’s List”, and a suite of themes from Star Wars including “Princess Leia’s Theme”, “Throne Room & Finale”, “Yoda’s Theme”, and “The Imperial March”. It also features the “Raiders March” from Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark. To close the album, a special piece titled “Tributes! (for Seiji)”—composed by Williams in honor of the late Seiji Ozawa, a long‑time friend and founder of the Saito Kinen Orchestra—is performed under Denève’s baton.
Recorded live in September 2023 at Suntory Hall, In Tokyo showcases the tonal beauty, expressive refinement, and commanding orchestral power of Williams’s music in a concert setting, capturing both the cinematic sweep and intimate nuance of his compositions.
