Keith Jarrett & Charlie Haden – Last Dance – Double 180 Gram Vinyl Records
Last Dance reunites pianist Keith Jarrett and bassist Charlie Haden in recordings made at Jarrett’s home studio in 2007. Drawn from the same intimate sessions that produced Jasmine, the 2014 album is devoted largely to standards and alternate takes, with no drummer and no need for either musician to prove how much technique he possesses.
“My Old Flame,” “My Ship,” and “’Round Midnight” unfold at generous length. Jarrett states melodies with unusual directness, then opens their harmony through small substitutions and singing inner voices. Haden’s bass is warm and deliberate, supporting the song while introducing countermelodies that redirect the conversation.
Bud Powell’s “Dance of the Infidels” briefly raises the tempo, and “It Might as Well Be Spring” balances optimism with reflection. The duo’s long association, dating back to Jarrett’s American Quartet, is audible in the ease with which accompaniment and solo roles exchange places.
“Everything Happens to Me,” “Where Can I Go Without You,” “Every Time We Say Goodbye,” and “Goodbye” make the second half feel valedictory without becoming sentimental. The two alternate takes are complete performances chosen for their own shape, not studio fragments.
This ECM edition spreads the nine-track album across two 180-gram vinyl records. The quiet recording and spacious mastering preserve the room sound, piano decay, and physical presence of Haden’s bass.
Brand new, never played and still sealed in the factory plastic
