Loretta Lynn – Still Woman Enough – Vinyl Record
Still Woman Enough finds Loretta Lynn returning to the foundations of her music with a voice and perspective only she could bring. Released in 2021, the thirteen-song album places newly recorded versions of familiar Lynn songs beside gospel favorites and country standards. Daughter Patsy Lynn Russell and John Carter Cash produced the sessions at Cash Cabin in Hendersonville, Tennessee. The choices tell a story about where Lynn came from, what she believed, and the songs that remained close to her across a long career. Her own material sits comfortably beside songs she had known since long before she became a country star.
The title track welcomes Reba McEntire and Carrie Underwood, making the album's celebration of women in country music audible from the beginning. Lynn co-wrote the song with Patsy Lynn Russell, and its title also recalls her 2002 memoir. The guests connect several generations, but the center of the performance remains Lynn's character: plainspoken, determined, and willing to speak for herself. That quality runs through the record, whether she is singing about a complicated relationship or turning to a song of faith. The collaborations work because the visitors join a musical world she had already spent decades establishing.
Margo Price appears on One's on the Way, and Tanya Tucker joins You Ain't Woman Enough. Those pairings return to songs that helped define Lynn's place in country music, bringing voices from later generations into performances whose subject matter still has bite. Honky Tonk Girl reaches further back, revisiting the song that launched her recording career in 1960. I Wanna Be Free and My Love add other chapters to the selection. These are new performances of older songs, so the interest lies partly in hearing how Lynn inhabits material associated with earlier stages of her life.
The traditional selections make clear that gospel was part of that life as well. Keep On the Sunny Side connects the album to the Carter Family tradition, while I Saw the Light brings in Hank Williams. Where No One Stands Alone and I'll Be All Smiles Tonight belong to a repertoire carried between homes, churches, radio broadcasts, and country stages. Lynn approaches them with the same directness she gives her own songs. Their presence also keeps the album from becoming solely a return to famous singles: it makes room for the music that helped shape the singer before those singles existed.
Coal Miner's Daughter appears as a recitation, allowing the story to be heard in a different way from the familiar sung version. It is an appropriate choice for an album so concerned with memory and continuity. The new cover portrait also looks back to that part of Lynn's career, with a Tim Cobb gown inspired by the earlier Coal Miner's Daughter artwork. Still Woman Enough gathers those connections without trying to cover every period of her catalog. Instead, it concentrates on thirteen performances that bring her songwriting, her Kentucky roots, her faith, and her influence on other singers into the same room. The result feels personal because each of those subjects was personal to Loretta Lynn.
Brand new, never played and still sealed in the factory plastic
