Louis Wishes You a Cool Yule gathers Louis Armstrong’s holiday recordings into a coherent album for the first time. The collection reaches across his catalog, bringing together small-group swing, orchestral pop, duets, and a newly unearthed spoken performance. Armstrong’s gravelly warmth makes the familiar material feel personal rather than ceremonial.
“Cool Yule,” written by Steve Allen, and “‘Zat You, Santa Claus?” show Armstrong at his most playful, balancing comic timing with immaculate phrasing. “Christmas in New Orleans” brings the setting close to home, while “Winter Wonderland” and “White Christmas” demonstrate how thoroughly he could claim standards through tone alone.
The guest performances broaden the program. Ella Fitzgerald joins “I’ve Got My Love to Keep Me Warm,” and Velma Middleton turns “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” into a characterful exchange. “Christmas Night in Harlem” connects seasonal celebration to jazz history, and “Moments to Remember” adds a gentler postwar-pop shade.
The closing “A Visit from St. Nicholas” is the collection’s special discovery: Armstrong reading the poem on a private recording, now supported by pianist Sullivan Fortner. This direct-to-consumer green vinyl edition presents all eleven tracks, including the spoken finale. The colored pressing is a distinct variant and is identified separately from the red and blue/red editions issued for the same collection.
